Acknowledgments

An Acknowledgments page makes mention of the people that contributed (directly or indirectly) to the making of your book. Unlike a dedication, acknowledgments are longer and more descriptive of the people involved, and their contributions.

Acknowledgments are set up with one paragraph for each person, either indented:

I’d like to thank my brother, Paul Smith, for his help proofreading my manuscript before the first edition shipped. Without his help my work may never have made it to the shelves.
My parents, as well, were instrumental in my writing career. They helped me from a young age realize my talents and love for the craft.
Finally, I’d like to thank my friend Tom for critiquing the story with me in every draft. It was hard work, but I’m glad I had the opportunity to do it with a good friend.

Or in point form:

  • Paul Smith, for his help proofreading my manuscript before the first edition shipped. Without his help my work may never have made it to the shelves.
  • My parents, as well, were instrumental in my writing career. They helped me from a young age realize my talents and love for the craft.
  • Tom, for critiquing the story with me in every draft. It was hard work, but I’m glad I had the opportunity to do it with a good friend.

Acknowledgments should take up at least half of one page. If you have few people you’d like to thank, a Dedication may be a better option to emphasize their contributions.
