Choosing a Book Font

Fonts are visual representations of letters. Your choice of font has a significant impact on the readability and style of your book, and a poorly sized or illegible font can leave a bad impression on readers.

There are a few styles that are used industry-wide across many different books. Here are a few popular choices:

Garamond, a popular typeface in both classic literature and Children's Books.
Garamond is good for larger text, the details are moderate and appear best at 12pt. or higher. Garamond is truly a classic typeface, with its publishing roots going back almost 500 years.

Garamond, a narrow typeface designed for larger print sizes and highly detailed displays.
Baskerville is a good typeface for medium text. The thin details are more difficult to read at smaller sizes (10pt. or below), but the font remains a favorite among certain publishers.

Caslon, a font commonly used in biographies.
Caslon is readable from small sizes (10pt. and lower) to large sizes (14pt. and higher). Due to it's versatility and style, it's used commonly in published works.

Comic Neue, a variant of Comic Sans rebuilt for better styling and easier reading.
Comic Neue is a handwriting-style font that's loosely based on the system-standard Comic Sans font. However, many changes have been made to Comic Neue that greatly enhance the look and readability. It's thin features are difficult to read at sub-17pt. sizes, but it's childish quality makes it an excellent font for Children's Books.

These fonts may require a commercial license in order to use in a book you plan to sell. If you're looking for fonts that can be commercially used free of charge, there are resources like Google Fonts.
